Why you ask? Well, in my completely biased and not so humble opinion (being a 20+ year PGA Member), there are a whole host of reasons that you should support the PGA Professional at your local club.
He (or she) is the one you ask for a free swing tip, to get you on another course that you can’t get on by yourself, to fit you for new clubs, to fix your broken golf club, to answer your rules questions, to squeeze you in when you forget to make a tee time, to let you start on #10 when the only person that’s going to hear about it from another golfer is the pro, to donate goods and services to your favorite charity, to run your tournaments…and the list goes on.
Yes, we have many roles and we must be not a jack-of-all-trades in the golf business, but a master of them. And we do it because we love the game of golf and being around those who play it.
So when you’re looking to buy that new driver or a new set of irons, give your PGA Pro a chance to bat. Many times you’ll find that the price is actually lower than the big box store with all of the alluring ads in your Sunday paper. And if we’re a few bucks more expensive, are we not worth it?
If you answer truthfully and can’t answer YES right away, then we’re not doing our jobs.
You can support your PGA Pro by playing in events at your club. We spend many hours coming up with new and interesting events that will appeal to a broad range of golfers. So the format isn’t your favorite or you don’t think you have a chance to win. Big Deal! The point of playing golf is to enjoy the game and the camaraderie with your fellow players. Play in your club events and get others to play too. Golf is truly a more the merrier endeavor!
